Giving Thanks 2022

In 2011 we felt so tired of the Thanksgiving narrative & normalization of this day that celebrates invasion and genocide that we started an intentional practice of celebrating Indigenous resistance & resilience.

So now every year, wherever we are ,we take time to remember that despite all of the horrors of colonialism & imperialism that indigenous peoples are still here. Still living, still breathing & still loving. We offer these images as a way to fight against erasure, invisibility & the violence of forgetting.

Giving thanks for 39 years of Zapatista struggle and autonomy. The EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation) declared war on the country of Mexico, demanding to be seen while fighting for the rights of all Indigenous people whose humanity has been denied. Beginning in 1983 the EZLN started to organize in the mountains of Chiapas, training to fight for liberation and creating autonomous communities that provided for the people. They show the world what it could be like to live in a world that chooses life instead of greed and death. One day we will, once again, have this kind of autonomy to determine our lives and our futures here and all communities throughout the world. #ezln #zapatistas
